    C2 Compressor - Clutch won't disengage

I've got a '65 SB with A/C (A-6 compressor). I had a place in Florida - name escapes me - who I was told was very good, rebuild it. The compressor's clutch will not dis-engage (compr keeps running). Easy fix ? Local shop lossen and tighten the pulley ?? Send back ?

    Thanks,
    Mark

If you remove the electrical connection, does the compressor clutch remained engaged?

I haven't tried removing the connection with the car running (should I ?). I did disconnect the contacts from the compressor after I shut the motor down and removed the belt. It stayed engaged at that point. If it had 12V at that connection (I'll check tonight), I would think the clutch should have dis-engaged, if electrical was the problem. Thoughts ? Thanks

I believe the gist of the question (does clutch disengage without DC power) was intended as a diagnostic. There's supposed to be a specified air gap between the AC pulley and the clutch plate when the clutch is disengaged (0.025 or so, if memory serves).

If the mechanic who worked on the compressor re-assembled it without leaving the proper air gap, then it's possible for the compressor's clutch to be engaged all the time regardless of the whether or not the magnetic coil is energized. So, by removing power to the clutch (either pull the plug or turn the ignition off), it ought to disengage and you'll see the air gap that was dialed in!
