    Stamp pad question?

There is a 64 coupe on e-bay the seller says it is original and the last 2 #'s on the stamp pad are backwards! Is this a common happening? I don't think I have seen one this way. He has no pics of the pad, alot of pics otherwise. It is item # 140225468497.What is your general opinion of this car? Thanks in advance Tom

    Re: 64 Stamp pad question?

Tom -- i'm not clear on what the seller is saying. ie. that the VIN tag is 2 digits higher or lower than the engine pad ? ... that the trans matches the VIN tag ? Agree on no excuse for lack of pic(s) of said anomaly.

And what the heck are those metal brackets bolted to the bottom of the diff cover ?

It's probably legit. The number stamped in the pad has the last two characters reversed.
The VIN is #9107 but the stamp pad is 9170.

When I first saw the pic of the car on ebay, and noticed it was being sold here on the west coast of FL, I immediately thought it was my old white 64 that we bought new in 1964.
It's not though. Ours was white with white interior. I know it's here, or at least was here, in the early 80's but haven't seen or heard from it since.

Tom, I might be completely wrong but I have been led to believe that the vin derivative stamp on the engine & transmission was done at the St Louis assy plant with the same holder, & at the same time. Thus if the trans stamp matches the vin number, the engine stamp should also.
It just seems a little strange that both stamps done with the same holder do not match.

I think the seller is saying that both the engine stamp and transmission stamp are the same with the same error.

That car is probably only about 20 miles from where I live. I may go look just to get a few pic's of the engine pad.

              Michael,

If you have the time and inclination, I think a lot of us would find that very educational.

              All the best,
              Joel

That was only true for '63, '64, and early '65 model years; changed in very late '64.

The chassis of my early '65 # 014xx probably sat on the line, at some stage of assembly, during the St.Louis strike. The car was among those completed the first day of resumption in production.

The tranny case has BOTH (side by side) stamp formats [ie. 51014xx and S1014xx]. This probably happened 6th November 1964 (for the latter format) and maybe weeks earlier (Sept 25th ?) for the former.
