    Restamped starters

Recently there was a post and thread about a restamped 1108400 starter and restamped starters in general. A comment made was that if it's a restamp pass on it alluding to perhaps it's a "shady" operation performed by many. If it is a genuine GM restamp does that still apply to pass on GM restamped starters, too? Aren't there restamped engines in many NCRS members Corvettes? Isn't a GM restamped starter kind of like a GM issued CE block? One is acceptable and the other not but both are issued by GM? I'm trying to grasp the rationale.

    Thanks,
    Scott

I don't even know what a "GM Restamp" is. Such things may have occurred but, if it did, I would expect a grind-out and re-stamp just like was sometimes done on engine pads. However, I've never seen a "verified original" GM re-stamp starter, either as originally used on a car or a SERVICE piece.

If a re-stamp is done by a rebuilder/restorer and that re-stamp is undetectable from original, then I would suppose it would get full credit. If it's detectably non-original, then I suppose it would not get full credit. Simple as that.

I suppose it's possible this is a factory re-stamp. The "X-ing out" of the original number is an alternate way that numbers were "obliterated" and re-stamped. However, I believe that GM policy of the day was that if 2 or less characters were to be changed, the "X-ing out" was to be used; if greater than 2, the number was to be ground out and restamped in total. Of course, I've seen many examples of this policy not being followed on other items.

This,, particular, starter was not a big block starter. For one thing, the GM #1107247 was a starter used for 1964-66 283 and, POSSIBLY, 327 engines. For another thing, this starter is configured as a "standard torque" unit; most, if not all, big blocks used a "high torque" starter. However, 1965 Chevelle Z-16 MAY have used the 1107247 starter.

The date on this starter is curious. March 1, 1963. That would make it a very early manufacturing date for the initial use of this starter for the 1964 model year. I can't find any 1963 model year applications for this starter.
