Changing Parts After Tech. Before Judging

Can a part be changed after the car went through tech. IE. Changing a battery with a dead original one.

See Section 2, item #18, in the Judging Reference Manual:

"From the time divisional judging begins, whether one or two days, until it ends, cars entered in Flight Judging either day will be assumed ready to be judged as presented. There is no allowable provision for any repair, alteration, addition, deletion or changing of parts on a car during judging except as specifically outlined under FAILURE TO START. Additionally, no auxiliary electrical power source may be utilized, such as a battery charger or electrical generator."

Ken -- since it's been a couple of hours and no black hats have responded, let me put my neck on the chopping block

IMHO short answer is no, but I can see where a lawyer of Justice Dept. caliber could find cause, depending on whether flight judging commences with operations check or just after, when car's in final assigned position on the field.

Tech (ie. Operations Check) ... from Judging Reference Manual Sect. 2, # 18 "on-field repairs or alterations" ... adddition, deletion not allowed, except a single battery boost under "Failure to Start". Then it has to re-start under its own power after 10 minutes charge time -- so that rules out a completely dead original battery.

Then, in '65 TIM&JG (sure the other years are the same) under "Operations Check" says: Operations Judging does not allow for the adjustment, exchange or repair of any item.

        Ken,

OPS is part of the judging process- NO parts may be changed since you started judging as soon as the two members of the OPS team introduce themselves and ask for your judging sheets to perform OPS check

There is NO provision that allows for any work on a Flight judged car, other than wiping it down, once it is placed on the judging field. There is a misconception that you can continue restoring your car until the judges arrive. Worst case senario is that you could be disqualified from having your car judged.

In fact, that exact issue came up at Danvers Mass during the time I was the Nat. Judging Chairman at the '85 Convention. A certain early car owner wanted to have credit for the NOS battery in his car (with no electrolyte in it) and be allowed to use a different battery to start the car. The choice was either but not both for the duration of the process. The late Sam Folz was the team leader and handled it very effectively.

THANKS everyone. I was sure that parts can't be changed once judging starts. DICK At least that's not as bad as NASCAR where the part is impounded, you are ask to leave & get fined 25,000.

You see lots of work happening in the trailor lot before the car is driven to the judjing field. No where will you find more experts to help with a little last minute fix.
