    454 Valve Covers

These were pulled off a 1970 LS-5 engine. I think one of them is incorrect...the one with the push in oil cap and wire loom holders. Can someone tell me what that one is?

The one with the filler hole is definitely incorrect for a 1970 Corvette. I'm not even 100% sure the other one is correct for a 1970 Corvette, but it may be.

The one with the filler hole is from a 1971-74 non-Corvette big block application. Although some very early 1971 Corvettes did use chrome valve covers, they were the 1970 style with twist-lock cap.

Also, the individual, rubber coated spark plug wire brackets are very "non-Corvette". I suspect that these covers originally resided on a 1971-75 Chevelle or Monte Carlo. They often used chrome valve covers.

That's what I suggested to the owner. She was told when she bought it many years ago that everything on her 454 engine is correct. So far, because of the information you provided, several items were found not to be correct. Here is a photo from the opposite side.

I don't know much on the C3 big blocks, but for what it's worth the driver side cover appears correct for 70 and early 71 Chevelle, passengers side does not.

Thanks to Joe, Steven, and Tom. I was hoping for a photo for comparisons so I can send them to the lady who owns the Corvette. I don't take credit for supplying this information to her. I tell her who said what and where. I think she renewed her NCRS membership this week.

Tom's valve covers are identical to the examples of the 1970 and early 1971 Chevelle covers as well.

                Re: 454 Valve Covers

Sometime back there was a discussion about the power brake booster indent on driver's side valve covers. The discussion stated that the 1970 Corvette LS-5 valve covers didn't have the pronounced power brake indent like the '60s versions but have a 70 degree slope nearest the firewall. Correct?

One of the biggest mistakes, in my opinion, is that many people who rechrome these original valve covers go for the glitz and get them triple chromed which loses their characteristic dimpling. I have had three sets flash chromed like those of the days of old. The knowledgable are pleased with what they see, the youth are aghast at seeing what they call 'dents' and the dull chrome look.

Attached are shots from my 71 LS5 (Sept 70 build date). Mine don't have any type of "clip" along the top edge of the cover as has been shown in previous postings. I have no reason to believe that these are not original to my car.

I just realized that this is my first post using the new board. Yaaa hoooo!

My 70 #7601 has no clips one the top but one on the bottom on the drivers side. Pass. side has two on the top & one on the bottom.

The slope/dent is there, but its a little hard to see in the picture. These were flash chromed. I was a little dissapointed with the look initially, but I quess I'm supposed to be.
