June '72 seat belt warning buzzer

Does anyone have prior knowledge of cars from this time period that did not have seat belt alarm wire harnesses under the passenger seat. The date on the seat belts is correct, the yellow linen powder is present, the fabric is comfortweave, leading me to believe that the seat is original. The rear body harness is present and is neatly folded under the carpet along with the wiring for the alarm system. Did GM decide not to put switches under the passenger seat?

I'm nearly 99.9% sure that all vettes in 72', specially the 2nd half of the production year all used the weight/pressure sensitive sensor under the passenger seat.

My car from the first week of June has sensors in both seats.

      Patrick

      Well, let me amend that-
I "assume" both sensors are present, because the stupid buzzer goes off if there is weight in either seat and the seat belts are not engaged. I've never actually removed the seats to check.

For my January "72 production Corvette: It's been many years since I've had my seats out of the car, but I don't recall seeing that a sensor was installed on the driver's seat. However, I do recall that a sensor was installed on the passenger seat.

I will go out on a limb here and rely on memory. As I recall, this was something that came in during the calendar year 1972, not the model year. Thus, this changeover occured in January 1972. I know that certain other interior changes came about during January 1972. Prior to that, it was just an "idiot" light. Reba, where are you?

If I sit in the driver's seat and don't buckle, a buzzer goes off. If I leave the car or I'm not in the seat, no buzzer (I think).

If I put a grocery bag in the passenger's seat and don't buckle it in, the buzzer goes off.

                Patrick -
                right on the money.

My car is a April 72' weight sensor on the pass. seat, and a sensor plugged into the seat belt unit under the seat, just as soon as you pull the belt out 10" or so, buzzer goes off. Nothing pressure sensitive on dvr. side.

Check the drivers seat and see if the switch is in it. Someone may have switched the seats but only on a convertible without shoulder belts. The plug could be tucked up in the springs and hard to see with the seat installed. The drivers seat did not need a switch. If you started to drive and your seat belt was not on the buzzer went off.

Actually, I think there's a timer that sets it off.

Some research was done on this when we were revising the 1970-72 JG. The change occurred about January as Gary noted. However, we did find one car built sometime in December that had the buzzer. (Somewhere I am sure that I have a note regarding date and VIN.) The clue will be belt model number, C14 without the buzzer; C15 with.

Re: June '72 seat belt warning buzzer

I just checked the PV manual. According to it, the buzzer is silenced by extending the seat belt from the retractor. It does not say that it has to be fastened. My car is too early to have the buzzer so I cannot check it out.

Patrick, your car is late enough to check.

You are correct. Extend the belt and the buzzer goes off. I don't even have to check it today - I've done it many times. It does not have to be fastened.

I suggest there is a timer since the buzzer always takes several seconds before it goes off.

I will need to remove my driver's seat. The car is a convertible with no shoulder belt. Switching the seats certainly sounds like a possible answer. Both seat belts are C15. Thanks for the discussion, I'll post later.

                              Why switch the seats?
Those switches are very easily found in other years of Corvette, and your PV or Operations Judging "may" include checking the one on the passenger's side too!
