The 3795470 1963-only bolt was 1.94" long and that confirms the reason for the washer being used. Since a 1.84" bolt length is actually required, the 3/32" (0.09") thick washer just about compensates for the extra length of the 3795470. So, why didn't they just use the correct length bolt to begin with? That would be a good question.

One other thing, though: while the 3795470 bolt was a one-year-only bolt as far as 63-82 Corvettes are concerned, it was also used for 1962 Corvettes with Powerglide. There may have been some 1962-only reason for the bolt length and it was carried over into 1963. Then, corrected for 1964 with a change in the bolt.

I assume the car is a 4 speed if it has the cast iron nose. If so, the cast iron nose is the correct one. There has been some discussion here recently regarding these "3 hole" starter noses. Personally, I've never run into one but maybe I've led a "sheltered life". I feel quite sure that these are for 14" flywheels, just like the far more common 2 hole cast iron noses. I just don't understand the reason for the "third hole". I do not understand how the "third hole" could align with any of the block's 3 starter bolt attachment holes, so why have it there, at all?. However, perhaps there are some blocks out there with an additional starter attachment hole that does align with the "third hole" on the starter nose.

The starter should have a cast iron nose and be retained by TWO 3.63" long starter bolts of GM #3733289. These are still available from GM.

Thanks for a really excellent and informative discussion of starter bolts.

I have to attach a starter to a 1959 283 that has been rebuilt from scratch. Currently, I have no bolts. Is there anything I need to know about that?

1959's used a bellhousing-mounted starter. I don't think there was anything special about those bolts.

                  Excellent information Joe, thank you!

In the 82 bolt there is an slot/line in the knurled area, probably matching the counterbore deepness in the block.

                  Best regards
