    C2 Caliper Rattles

I have one caliper (RF) that the pads rattle a lot. The caliper is worn a very small amount (where the pad ends contact) & permit a little end to end movement. Is there any solution available that actually works to hold them in place?

    Thank you.

It is common for them to move back and forth and make sound when going from reverse to forward. If they are rattling when you hit a bump, something else is wrong. There should be enough spring pressure on the pistons to keep that from happening.

I agree; I can't see any reason for the front pads to "rattle", regardless of any wear on the calipers where the pad backing plates contact it. One thing that can cause "squeaking", though, is excessive runout on the rotor. This causes the pads to move inward and outward and cause "squeaking" as the pad backing plates move against the calipers. This can occur with either front or rear brakes.

True, but it is my observation that most of the squeaking is caused by the pad rubbing against the retainer pin.

It rattles when hitting bumps. I rebuilt that caliper because it was weeping & saw nothing wrong. Any other ideas? I have zero squeak issues.

Make absolutely sure the bolts holding the caliper on are tight. They rattle like crazy when the bolts are loose.

              Wayne,

They are as tight as my first employer's wallet! It's definitely the pads rattling.

If the internal springs are inside those calipers, it would be hard for them to rattle. Now, do you have o-ring type seals or maybe have the springs out?
The only other thing to rattle would be the pins.

As I said, I rebuilt that caliper but it was a few years back. I know they have springs and if they weren't there, I should have noticed but don't recall. Then again, they may be weak & not doing the job correctly. They are the old style seals, not o-ring. Maybe it's time to pull apart & put new springs & seals.
