    '62 340 Carter AFB connection

We are prepping a 1962 Vette 340 with a Carter AFB carburetor for Bloomington Gold Certification and can not reach agreement on a proper connection. Is the fuel line from the fuel filter to the carburetor supposed to be brass (as it is now) or steel? We have mixed opinions. Any help would be much appreciated.
Assemply Manual refers to this as " 9415115 nipple "

    Thanks,
    Bill

I have an original 300 hp motor (not in the car) the pipe between the fuel filter & carb. is made of steel.
I just looked it & according to the judging guide pg. 56 it is made of black iron, not copper or brass.

      Thank a ton, Mike.

Can't see how we missed it. We've been lining with the judging Guide for the last few months. A big help.

I've never been able to find anything other than brass. If and when you find a steel (or black iron) one, please post a reference number and where you got it.

You can buy them all day long at any hardware store that actually still carries hardware. Black iron pipe nipple.

Question: What is your fuel line from the pump? I believe the two should match (to the filter & from the filter). Also, I have a 63 340 hp and I was always under the impression that the 62 and 63 340 hps pretty much mirrored each other, with the obvious exceptions (PCV, Air Filter, etc.). Mine uses Chrome plated steel lines and male flare fittings. The only brass I find on mine are the carb and fuel pump fittings. The filter has it's own fittings. You might want to check into this a little further, or wait for some more responses from the 62 owners/experts.

I checked at one of our remaining "real" hardware stores and their buyer says he can't get a black iron pipe nipple in the correct size we need. The hunt continues.

              Thanks guys.

Don't need a nipple, just a 2 inch section of 1/4 inch pipe threaded on each end. If your local hardware store doesn't have them, let me know and I'll stock up to go into the business! One end goes into the filter, the other end screws into the carb inlet. Both are 1/4 inch pipe threads, so no sealer needed either.

Sorry Bill, I was out of my yard on this one. I had pictured in my mind AFB connections I have seen, but obviously I didn't pay close attention to 62's (C-1's). I looked at drawings of your set up in Dr. Rebuild and now can appreciate what you are up against.

How do I place an order? I've been looking for this for many years. Dr. Rebuild doesn't carry them, and both Paragon and Corvette Central sell brass ones. I've gone to a few good old time hardware stores, and they too only carry brass in this small size.

The next question will be do you have a correctly configured Filter with the reddish-brown (something other than paper) filter inside?

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I've been looking for these darn things for years. Just ordered a 5 pack of them from www.acehardware.com. $4.46. No shipping if you have the item shipped to your local store. SKU is 4126744.

Another thought in this vein--the large adapter that allows the 2" pipe to fasten to the carburetor should be steel, NOT copper!!!! Many of the rebuilt 3269S and 3310S carbs you see for sale have brand new shiny copper pieces. Those are incorrect!

Us Farm Boys have to keep things simple, and the Ace store is about 1/4 mile from the Mickey D's where I breakfast most days to give my wife time to wake up!
