    Judging Question

I have reproduction parts.. door panels, not custom or modified but like original; do I lose all points for original and thus all points for condition as well? I am also looking at the green spring clamps on the fuel lines and bolt head stampings. I don't see much in the guide on this but some local NCRS guys picked it up as should do items.

    Ken,

You may lose a couple of points under originality for some of the various small ways the repros differ from originals. However, you should garner all points for condition assuming the condition warrants it. The only time you lose all points for BOTH lines is if you have an absolutely not-like-it-should-be part installed. An "Interstate" brand battery or Fram oil filter come to mind.

You can get green clamps at your local auto parts store, often in the "Help!" parts section. They differ a small bit from original, but it's as close as you will get unless you harvest them from old cars.

If you are truly interested it would do you well to study the NCRS Judging Matrix.

In your door panel example, the short answer is it depends on 5 factors plus the 90% rule followed by condition and lastly cleanliness (weighted points & guideline elements). A trained, experienced judge has a large number of issues to consider within a short period... I have never seen a full deduct for a quality accurately reproduced door panel that matched the legal trim code attached to the car.

Bring your car to a meet or two; you'll love it or hate it. You will learn how to evaluate door panels.

        Thanks Pat,

While my car seems great to some, I know there are so many things to do before I have it judged. That's fine, but I want to go about it in the right manner. I don't think I will be ready this year though!

        Regards,
        Ken

          Nick,

My local chapter has one this weekend and I will be there. I have been asked to walk along with a judge and watch, should be a good learning experience.

            Re: Judging Question

Kenneth, from what I understand in judging is that you can't judge off on a part just because you think it is a repo part. The repo part has to differ from the original.

It just depends how good the reproduction of the part is. Just to give you an example. The outside rearview mirror on early shark cars are repo'd by Paragon. They apparently have purchased the tooling from GM to make their mirrors. They even can do a date code too. I have not ever heard of a Paragon repo outside rearview mirror lose points just because it was a repo.

Some repos are just better than others.

I took my 71 LT1 to the NJ Regional in 2001 where it was awarded "Top Flight". I bought the Judging Manual and Technical Guide and studied them both for about a year and did my tweaking of the car before I registered. Good Luck

                Ken,

You could always grind those edges down a touch to make them a bit more correct.

IMHO, and I do not speak for all of the membership, I would have the car judged as it is at a Chapter meet. It will be a learning experience for you and the judges (especially the OJ's and less seasoned judges). For this reason, I like judging cars with a few issues.

                  Re: Judging Question

Joel has a good idea. Why not have the car judged as is? Then you have a better idea of what needs correcting. I have judged many cars where the owners have misinterpreted what is in the manual or believed what a buddy or a vendor told them is the correct part.

Getting a car judged first may save lots of money and the sorrow of replacing original items with reproductions.

I agree 100% with Reba. Take it to a local Chapter meet and have it judged "as is".

You'll have a good time, and learn a lot about the car. Don't start changing stuff till you know for sure.

Thanks to everyone. I am truly enjoying the education and the search for information and parts and resources. I love working on the car as much as driving it.

I am a local Long Island member and have great support there as well as here. More trouble than the house or having a mistress..

                          Re: Judging Question

The JM states (original & condition)
When the first JM were written it dint state that. The part was just real or not, and then condition. Corvettes were not at that time repro'ed from the ground up.

I know again I'm stepping in Sh*t, but because today so many repro' are being used it would be interesting to have a JM with four columns to it.
(Original) (condition) * (Repro) (condition) OK I'm just dreaming but original is original and if using todays JM you lose points under the column (original) many times it don't state WHY.
So if I see some ones judging sheet and it lost points under (original) it don't explain WHY!
Also taking a JM sheet and comparing it to your Corvette, that doesn't show a (pic) of what the part looks like then what?.That's where the judge will give the part full points or not.

                            Hey Roy,

I understand the "original" feeling about all this and I embrace it completely. I am the original owner of my car and still there are some things that I changed over the years, who knew?

Now, so many years have passed that finding a true original OEM off of the line part is the proverbial "barn find".

I would like to get my car straight and move toward having it judged. This too gives me a reason to tinker in the garage and check out neat stuff that I truly need!

                            Best regards,
                            Ken

It took me a long time learning and listening from others to know what a real part "looked" like. And years to locate them . The JM mostly covers part numbers not what it should "look" like. That's why people lose %25 or more money in restoring their Corvette to get the right looking "design" part.Hang in !
