    Alternator Clocking

I am questioning the new 63-64 manual. On page 110 in the alternator sectoin #14 it states the '64 alternator is phased with the provision for the gray plug to be 90 degrees from the mounting boss in a clockwise direction viewed from the rear. Then on page 111 it states the hole for the harness to be secured is to be at the 9 O'clock position.

This is not possible since the hole for the harness is approximatly 90 degrees offset from the plug in for the gray plug. If the gray plug is clocked 90 degrees (viewed from the rear) from the mounting boss in a clockwise direction then the hole for the harness to plug into is at 11 to 12 O'clock. What is correct?

    Re: Alternator Clocking

    Gene,

Here is a picture of my '64's alternator as it is installed. It has been flight judged and received no deductions. I think that the Judging Guide should read "the '64 alternator is phased with the provision for the gray plug to be 90 degrees from the mounting boss in a counter clockwise direction viewed from the rear."

    Hope this helps.

Agree that the clock description for the rear half (CE) of the alternator case hole should read 11:00 (IMO). This leaves for a clumsy orientation of the wire harness, as shown in James' pic (although correct). I'm more familiar with '65s, so I checked my many magazine road tests from back then, and sure enough, the wire harness loops over the top, then down to plug in the nylon anchor in the hole, then curves back outboard to the respective connections. I'm not familiar with the details for 1963 MY, but the road test pics seem to show a vertical position for the gray F/R (field/relay) plug.

This plug/harness orientation makes for a much neater layout for C60 cars ('64-'65 [don't know for '63]) and all left hand alternator mountings for '66-67. Of course '65-7 BB orientations, especially with power steering, are a separate chapter.
