    The Final Drive!!! Part 1

Good evening all. After owning my 67 for 17 years, I finally have the opportunity to have it judged at the Michigan Regional Meet which starts in five days. Of course it is not exactly ready yet! Below is a check list. If you have any answers, please responed.
    1. Gas tank cap paper gasket. Is it light brown or light grey?
    2. Black phosphate bolts retaining spare tire housing. Do they have integral, captive or seperate washers?
    3. Source for rubber stamp to ink Alternator Diodes.
    4. Source for internal glass color coded fuses.
    5. What does a squared off end lock washer look like? (dealing with A/C-a ground wire from the R horn mounting bolt and the radiator core support)
    6. Source for soft rubber boot with two small ears protecting the hex fitting connecting the dehydrator to the condenser. Have a rotten one!
    7. Source for black plactic insulators over the rear facing pins from the rivets on the lower flange for the steering coupling "rag joint".

    2. Although the JG says "integral washers", they're not; the AIM (and known-original cars) show separate flat washers.
    4. Junkyard - the repro fuses have the color on the outside.
    7. LICS.

Thank you John Hinckley. Four out of seven is pretty darn good, in lieu of the fact that no one else responded!

Number 6 is also a junk yard item. Lots of GM air cond cars still have them on the condensor lines.
        Have fun at the meet.

Thanks Paul Campbell. I hope it isn't raining early this week. You know how muddy those junk yards can be.

            Ben,

Did you ever find one of these?

If it was listed anywhere in the AIM, it should be on UPC C60-B1. The torque for the Hex fitting is shown, but the rubber boot is not shown or called out. Does anyone know what the GM part number is?

              Scott -

It's not in the A.I.M. because it wasn't installed at St. Louis - the rubber boot was a detail part of the freon line from the supplier. You'd need the drawing of the freon line to get the GM part number of the boot, and the boot probably wasn't available separately from GMPD.

Thanks John, I figured it was something like that.

Does anyone have a good picture of this "soft rubber boot with two small ears protecting the hex fitting connecting the dehydrator to the condenser"?

No picture here, but this "boot" was part of the AC system on many many GM cars of the era. My 1967 Chevelle had one -- until we resto-modded it. I doubt it is still extant since all that old AC stuff has been replaced -- but I will ask.

The rubber boot with "ears" looked like the photo below.

                        John,

Thank you very much for the picture, it's worth slightly over a thousand words

Re: The Final Drive!!! Part 1

I found the picture below posted by Joe Randolph in the archives. The arrow points to the hex fitting that connects the Drier to the Condenser, which is where the rubber boot goes, if I understand correctly.

With the Drier removed, is the boot installed by stretching the boot, "small" end (opposite the ears) first, over and past the Condenser tube hex fitting, so that the hex fitting can be tightened when the Drier is connected, and then grab the "ears" (oriented closest to the Drier) to stretch/pull the boot back over the hex-fitting, pulling the boot toward the Drier?

Is the purpose of the rubber boot to act as a cushion, to keep the hex fitting from rattling against the Condenser?

Scott, I always thought it was part of the shipping protection for the condenser and once the condenser was installed in the car there was no use for the rubber boot. I have to admit that I have no basis for that speculation, just a SWAG on my part. It would be good to know the real reason for it.
