Is there a solvent or solution (besides painting) to remove gas stains from L-79 alum. intakes ? Thanks in advance.

.....like Berryman's B-12 Chemtool. I've been using this stuff for 45 years. I was introduced to it in my first (and only) job in the automotive industry (part time gas station attendant from 1963-65 when I was in high school). I studied under several "masters" at that gas station. I think it's where I learned most of what I know about cars.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Joe;
Any suggestions as to who carries the Berryman's product? I'm sure a lot of fellows, myself included, would like to know a good solvent for this purpose. I used something years back that did a great job on my intake and valve covers. I thought it was called "Alumiblast", but the latest stuff I bought by that name is actually a paint (not the same).

Unless something has changed very recently, Berrymans is widely available in auto parts stores. I think that all of the chain stores have it. The formulation may have changed over the years due to air quality requirements, but the last supply of it that I purchased seemed to work just as good as the that I used at Tony Telecky's Chevron station so long ago. It smelled about the same, too, so that may mean its formulation hasn't changed much.
I might add that Berrymans is NOT marketed as a product for cleaning aluminum. It is a CARBURETOR CLEANER like that clem spoke of. However, it can be used for a lot of other things as can any carburetor cleaner.
The only "Alumiblast" that I know of is the paint.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Holley Stains (Gas)
Be careful with the carb cleaners, especially the Berryman's B-12. These cleaners will quickly dissolve/lift lacquer paints if accidently spilled or sprayed on the paint. Provide PLENTY of padding on the fenders and underside of the hood when using it.
If I recall correctly, Berryman's B-12 also contains some of the chlorinated solvents that are used in PAINT STRIPPER. It is also somewhat hazardous to bare skin.
I have used mineral spirits (paint thinner) with a small brush and rag to cleanup the Holley caused gas stains on my aluminum manifold. If used regularly, it does a decent job of cleaning and will not lift the lacquer paint.

Re: Holley Stains (Gas)
Actually if your intake looks pretty good except the gas stains, I'd try some brake cleaner, BUT don't get any on painted surfaces.....
If it's a nit nasty and you want to bring it back around then I'd try the Alumiprep.
If you have intake off the car and also have the aluminum valve cover (actually ANY parts) that need to be cleaned, I'd be recommending SODA BLASTing.
Here is a web site that has some pretty good examples of before and after shots (look under Automotive)

Re: Holley Stains (Gas)
Always use the LEAST AGGRESSIVE restoration technique FIRST. If its results are satisfactory, you're done. If not, you proceed to the next-to-least aggressive method. And so on.
The Berrymans or other carb cleaners are just about the least aggressive methods you can use other than soap and water. The Alumiprep is about half way up the scale.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
