    1972 Protecto plate - decoding

    I have several questions in regard to protecto plate codes and will ask them on seperate posts.

    The first is in regard to the transmission codes. The 1972 AIM refers to the example "POR15", What does this stand for? And what do they (AIM) mean "USE SOURCE & DATE"?
    The codes on my transmission are P2E19A. What, if any, of these code characters should appear on the protecto-plate?

    Can anyone give me some help with my Protecto-plate question?

    It would be appreciated.

    Thanks

      I believe the POR15 example is a transmission breakdown code that would appear on the POP.

      P Muncie
      0 Model year ( 1970 )
      R Month built ( October )
      15 Day built ( 15th day )

      Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is how I understand the codes on the trans section of the POP.

      Your trans would translate to
      P ( Muncie )
      2 Model year ( 1972 )
      E Month built ( May )
      19 Day built ( 19th day )

      I would guess the A would be for 1st shift ???

        Re: 1972 Protecto plate - decoding transmission

        Tom,
        Just a follow-up on the coding of my transmission and your uncertainty of the letter "A". The code translate as follows:
        P2E19A
        P = Muncie 4-speed
        2 = 1972
        E19 = May 19th
        A = 2.52:1 - First gear - wide ratio

        The example in AIM (POR15) is confusing. Is it a letter "O" or is the number "0". I think I agreed with you that it is a zero, but comparing it the other characters in the example I would say it is a letter "O".

        Do you agree?

        I really appreciate your thoughts and input.

        Jerry

          The font may indicate a letter O, but the digit is for sure a number 0 for the year produced. Like your 2 in the year position. I'm sure there are others who can shed more light on this than me.
