    67 Master Cylinder Caps

Which one of the caps in the photo looks more correct:

Both are repros, note the difference in the font size.

Which would you use for judging?

My choice would be the one at the top of the pic. Bob

I just went out to look at my 68. Your top repro is prettier, but the fonts are the same size.

I like the top one with the smaller font.

          Hi Jerry:

I usually look first at the "W" and the "D" characters, which are much wider on the originals than on the reproductions when the reproductions first came out. Check the attached comparison of an aged original and a 2006 repro.

Your photos are hard to read, but it it looks like the upper cap matches the repro in my photo. The lower cap has a much better "W" but I can't quite tell about the "D." The lower cap seems to have the vent openings pushed in more like the original, which was another difference in the early repro.

Since I think your question is a trick question, I studied the lower cap further and I see that the "E" is different from the original in my photo.

So, I'm going to guess that maybe both of these caps are repros, but the lower one is an improved version. What's the story on these?

            Hi Jerry:

I just re-read your original post, and I see that you already disclosed that both caps are repros. Given that, I have attached a single photo of the original cap that was spliced into my earlier photo. Maybe this version will have higher resolution for you to use as a reference.

I would probably use the lower repro for judging, unless there is something about it that I have not noticed. Overall, I think it is closer to the original in my photo than the top one.

              Joe,

Wasn't really a trick question, but I wanted to get your opinion.

The top one is the one which came with my almost correct repro master cylinder from CSSB.

The lower one is the newer repro cap from Noah Performance.

I think the finish is about right on the upper one, but the font seems off (too small)

The lower one seems to have too many green tones in finish, but the font looks better.

Thinking about stripping the lower one and putting a real cad dichromate finish like these:

              What do you think?

Geez, I love these finer points.

                Re: 67 Master Cylinder Caps

                Hi Jerry:

From a judging perspective I'm not sure I would complain about the lower cap, since I believe there was a wide variation in the factory hues. However, since you are all set up to plate it right, I say go ahead.

Regarding the newer repro from Noah Performance, I wonder whether this is really from Lone Star Caliper. Lone Star did the first version that came out a couple years ago. I spoke to the guy who was in charge of the project, and showed him the aspects that were not quite correct. He said his first production run was something like 2500 units, and when it was time to have more made, he might try to tweak the design to make it more correct. Maybe this is the tweaked version.
