    53-55 #1116904 replacement switch

    Top pic. #904 bottom #903

I'm putting this secret out for those people that are upset to realize that the original safety switch #1116904 are selling for over $400.00 and up. First there rare and hard to find so if you look for a Chevy 55-up over drive switch #1116903 or later #1116876 you can modifie it to work like a 904 and save big $$ . Looking at the pic. You cut the #2 post off the 903 making it look like a 904 then.

You hook the ground coming from the shifter switch to post #4
The hot wire from the ignition switch to post #3,
Solder a jumper wire from post #3 to post #2
Then the wire going to the starter to post #1
Now when you turn the key to start the engine it will start.
It will replace the 904 and start the engine and look correct. By the way I carry one in my 55 so if the 904 goes bad I can replace it with the 904 or 876 to start the engine.
Or you can jump the original switch with a wire from post #1 to post #2 = ignition yellow to starter pink wire and start the engine.

I hope this may save you $$ and help people. Let me know!!

      A relay is a switch.

        Re: 53-55 #1116904 replacement switch

I purchased a switch/relay from Mary Joe a couple of years ago. She sells the 4 prong version (I think it was a 903) with instructions on how to hook it up. I clipped the unneeded prong as Roy suggests. The outside cover differs slightly from the real thing I recall. But the 4 worked perfectly until I could find the real deal.

I don't recall how much Mary Jo charged for a brand new 904, but it wasn't all that much.
