    Sal,
I'm in the same boat with my '66 Milano Maroon. My painter did up a 6"x6" sample based on the DuPont formula and it looks too warm to me - but I have nothing to compare it to other than a chip from a 1966 DuPont brochure, which is a bit darker. I can't rely on the accuracy of the paint on the car, as it had been repainted in a former life. And besides, most of it got charred in a shop fire a year and a half ago. I'm all ears...

      Re: paint

If the re-paint wasn't complete, you may get lucky and find a hidden area, like underside of the top deck on a convert, under the sills, under the door panels.
      Milano was a darker maroon.
Currently, typically, the matches require a lot of reformulation and test shots.
You have only eluded to the color. The metallic is a another total set of complexities.
      Good Luck

          Don,
Thanks for the link. I have a copy of the original '66 DuPont chart and the problem is that the chips measure 3/4"x2" - large enough to help you choose the color when buying a car, but too small to make an accurate match when repainting. It's like painting a wall from a paint chip, only to have the wife turn up her nose because it wasn't the color she thought it was and force you back to the drawing board (if she didn't let me indulge myself with the Vettes, I'd take a stance, but I've learned that "yes dear, whatever you want" is the appropriate response).

            Re: paint

Beware of trying to use paint chips to color match. Chips are most times ink rather than paint. The are close color renditions at best. Best to find an original car. Milano is one of the hardest colors, on a mid year, to match. I have copy of Barry Kimmelman's formula that I could post, but it is not for lacquer. We just painted a '65 vert Friday using that formula and it looks real close

              Dick,
Are you still in the 'business?' Are you doing restorations, etc. for the public?

                Re: paint

Marc, this is the last for the public. I very much enjoyed the challenge of restoring to Duntov/Bloomington level at one time. Today I do not have the enthusiasm or the health to do it any more. It is a job that I did not really want but took it anyway.

The '65 is basically just an overall paint job and refresh of the engine compartment. I have had trouble with my painter's motivation, otherwise this car would have been gone over 6 months ago.

While I am still able I have a couple of non Corvette restorations that I want to do for myself. I have an International Harvester and a Federal (very large trucks of the late '40's vintage) that I would like to finish. They are what I grew up around and present me a different challenge (and the challenge of raising enough $$$ to finish them). I am taking them to the same level of perfection that we strived for when we did the Vette's full time.

the fellow on this site provided an exact paint formula for milano maroon based on his research...check it out

wish there were more actual formulas, by weight/volume, posted for standard colors folks have researched and successfully produced by specific manufacturer

                    Dick,
Mine is going to be BC/CC, but we're going to try to make it look as close to factory original as reasonably possible. Did you use DuPont paint on the '65 (my painter's preference)? Even if you didn't, I would appreciate Barry's formula (I looked at his website, but it didn't jump out at me).
                    Much thanks!

Go to his web site, Corvette pages, tech session and quite a ways down the page is the link to his formula. It is PPG paint

                          Re: paint

The only way to get an accurate match is to find original paint to match to. Check inside doors under the trim panel, under door sill trim, inside of right hinge pillar around z bar attachment or sometimes inner quarters behind lock pillars. Most currently available formulas won't give an accurate match. I'll check my files to see if I hae a match for Milano Maroon. If you can't find anything call me at 903 663 2727 and I'll see if I can help.
