    Bell housing - SB

Besides the part number what other codes (date and otherwise) should be found on the bell housing casting. The part number/bell housing I am referring to is 3899621.

Most, but not all, of these bellhousings will have a "bisected circle" casting mark. The number in one half of the circle represents the month the piece was cast; the dots represent the week of that month (i.e. 2 dots= 2nd week). There is no reference to year. So, half of the bellhousings of this casting number ever made would appear "correct" for any Corvette requiring this casting. I don't think that any of this is judged anyway, though.

      Hi Jerome and Joe,
Here are the 2 circles on the housing from my 71. It's a mid-January 71 build car. Joe, whats your guess as to 'reading' these circles? The shadows in the circles make me think the lines and the 2 dots are raised.
      Thanks a lot.
      Regards,
      Alan

        Alan, your picture is great.

Joe, what is your date/code interpretation of Alan bell housing?

There seems to be no numeral in the upper portion of the right side circle. So, no month was specified. Could the "3" seen above represent the month? It's possible. I have no information to verify that, though. All we really know about the date of this bellhousing is that it was made during the second week of some unknown month in some unknown year.

It looks like there are two raised dots in the lower half of the circle indicating the second week of the month in addition to some other marks that look like punch marks of some sort.

The circle on the left with no marks in it is the "status marker". It indicates blueprint changes and deviations. Apparently, none were in effect at the time of this casting.
