    C1 T-10 Transmission Dates?

I have not had any luck trying to figure some date information on the proper T-10 for may car..

For a May, 1960 built car:

    1. should the maincase be aluminum or cast iron?

    2. should the cast date be month day only or month day year?

    3. should the tail housing have the day month year as seperate castings apart or all on one plate?

Thanks in advance for your expertise..

    Joe

Joe, there's also assembly stamping on the upper flange face right behind the side plate. Please post that stamping. Gary....

        Re: C1 T-10 Transmission Dates?

Joe, sorry but that's not the #'s I'm referring to. If you mount the side cover on the main case - there are assembly no.s stamped into the upper rear flange of the main case on the side cover side machine surface. Those assembly no.s will tell you the shift and date the transmission was assembled.
Per a Restorer article written many moons a go by Wayne O. Loron here's the no.s for a 61-2 4 speed:
-Main Case - T10-1B, cast iron
        -Tailshaft Housing - T10 7A
-Side Cover T10-148B with cast Circled W
-Rear Bearing Retainer - T10-107 with cast Circled W

Example of Assembly code Case Stamp info:
        WJ 1312 T10 Assembly Date 9-13-61
        2101206 St.Louis Assembly Date 10-10-61

        Hope this helps. Regards,

        Gary....

Main case should be cast iron. The tailhousing pictured is typical of the period. The side cover date is in order, put it together and you should be good to go. the stamped number Gary is talking about is on the main case, drivers side, right next to where the rear edge of the side cover would be.

1.The date stamped on the T-10 main case is WC4-2 .. is this correct for a C1 with a mid may build date

            2. Does the main case get painted aluminum colour or is it left bare? IF its left bare how do you keep it from rusting?

            3. Why do some tail housing have a single plate with all the dates cast and it while others have 3 seperate casting plates, for the day, month and year? What is the significance of "M" or "W" just before the seperate month, day, year casting plates?

The date is not correct on this next pic.. is one of these a passenger car?

              Re: C1 T-10 Transmission Dates?

At some point, Warner gear upgraded the dating equipment to allow the strips that create the dates to be attached as one unit rather than in sets of one or two numbers. Sometime in the 1960-61 model year timeframe is when this appeared. The pictures you show are perfectly normal for the dates involved. For the early years, there was one tailhousing used for Corvette and Pass car applications in each year. I think you are making the T-10 world look a lot more complicated than it really was in the late 50's.

Joe, as Bill pointed out tailshaft date coding bars changed. The 1st tailshaft '57 T10 had the digits all on a single bar followed by SPAC. If I recall (CRS) how to interpret the stamped code C = March, 4 = day and -2 is the 2nd shift. W is for Winters Foundry. There have been several posts on products that can be put on bare finishes to keep them from rusting, from CastBlast to Ecklers and Quanta products. Search the archives for these posts. Gary....

Joe, if you referring to the tailshaft, the date coding is day/month/year and it shows a year of '60. If you referring to the main case a T10-1B was first used in '60. Not sure what you're questioning about being 1960? Gary....
