I am re-doing my 69 convertible top frame and cannot find the right answer in the archives on the correct color. Some suggest to use Krylon 1613 orRustoleum 7777 but these paints are clearly not correct as my top still has some of the finish left and appears glossy, not satin. Does anyone know the correct color and what is the best way to strip the old paint. Can I send it out to be dipped or media blasted?

Regardless of the gloss level on every other Corvette convertible top frame ever restored (they're all likely to be very close to the same gloss), or other owners' possibly subjective interpretation of the gloss level...the gloss level on YOUR CORVETTE should be what it was originally.
Having said all that, if you're going to use spray cans, try one labeled as "semi-gloss" black...you may find it's closer to the original gloss level than "satin" or "semi-flat". I have a hunch that convertible top frames may have slightly more gloss than satin or semi-flat.
As for stripping, I would chemically strip it, then clean it well and wipe it down with lacquer thinner afterward. That will be the cheapest approach with you maintaining maximum control over the project. If you prefer to pay someone to do it, I would only have it media blasted with a fine media like glass beads. If you have it media blasted, the media may get inside the frame members, and you can expect to see media leaking out of the frame for some time. The problem with dipping is that the stripping chemicals may get into the inside of the parts preparing them for corrosion and leaving no protective coating.
Scuff the frame members well with some 240 grit paper before repainting.- Top

Re: Color of 69 Convertible Top Frame?
I did this about 2--3 years ago and got the lacquer from a PPG store if I remember correctly. I know I had to drive 30 miles to find a dealer who'd order it for me. I can't remember exactly what it was, but there should be a thread in the archives. I know I got the answer on this board and found the correct paint.- Top

Wayne Womble knows wherewith he talketh; go with DDL 9300, unbuffed...if you can find it in your area.- Top
