Date codes---embossed versus raised

Some time back someone posted a rule of thumb to follow when determining when the letter 'I' was was in date codes. It's been too many weeks ago to search for it as it was posted under another title. If it's embossed the letter 'I' was not used and if it's raised characters the letter 'I' is used? Or the reverse?

In General:
If it is stamped (indented) -- NO I
If it is cast (raised) -- I is OK

I keep thinking there is an exception, but I still can't think of what it is.

Does this also apply to distributor bands? Is 'I' used on them?

Doesn't your TIM&JG give you the codes for the distributor band? Mine does.

Dammit! It does. I never saw that before now but it's in Section 27, page 92. Thanks, Terry.
