68 Muncie Shifter Adjustment

Can someone please give me detailed instructions on how to do this. I have found it very difficult to do it with the "guage" from underneath the car. I would like to move the shift rods into the short throw configuation. I understand that there may be a way of doing this without using the guage if you are careful.

Noel I have thought about doing this on my 68. Have not done it because I just don't drive it as much for the past 20 years and it shifts so good like it is. Interested in how much better you like it when you get yours changed.

The only way for me to use the gauge for the shifter adjustment is to remove the left side exhaust, and even then it is pretty hard to do. Put the shifter in neutral, loosen the adjusting nuts on the shifter rods, insert the gauge in the bottom of the shifter (you'll see a flat slot) and then re-tighten the adjusting nuts. If you want to move the rods to the upper (short throw) holes, then move the rods there loosely first, then insert the gauge and then tighten the adjusting nuts. The first time I attempted to insert the gauge it took me at least 30 minutes, and I used a hemostat to hold the gauge at the proper angle. Sometimes, you have to get the gauge in a little bit, then have a helper jiggle the shifter from inside the car, while you continue to push it through. Good luck. Once you get it the first time, the learning curve is pretty steep.

Thanks Michael. Using the hemostat or some type of clamp seems like a good idea.

Finally got this done and did use the guage. Many thanks to Joe Ciaravino for his post on doing this without using guage. It was a hell of a lot easier, quicker and the result is exactly what I was looking for.
