First time poster with frame repair question

    Hi All,

I am thinking of acid dipping my chassis and then having it galanized, after its been galvanized I want to paint it the correct color but am not sure the paint will stick. Any opinions?

    Thanks
    Dave

Re: First time poster with frame repair question

    Hi David,
Welcome aboard! I'm fairly new here myself, but the crowd has been outstandingly open and helpful. I had my frame acid dipped about a year ago, but then had it lightly sand blasted and powder coated in semi-flat (whatever that means these days!). After the powder coat, I sprayed inside the rails with an Eastwood rust inhibitor. I'm not a paint expert, but I seem to recall reading that there may be paint adhesion problems on top of galvanization. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in.
    Cheers!
    Jeff

      Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your response, I am concerned about the paint adhesion on the inside of the frame. I understand that the paint or powder coat will adhere well after the sand blast. I am hoping that someone will tell me about a product that will stick to the inside. How much did you pay for the dip and gal?

David, I prefer to use the non acidic dipping process as it doesn't eat away metal like the acid dip does. If you want to spray inside the frame rails there's a rust proofing wand that can be purchased. Have never galvanized a frame so have no feedback on that process. Always used metal etching primer for good adhesion and flatten Imron paint. This process has held up well for me. Good luck, Gary....

          David,
I believe I paid $450 for the acid dip and $400 for the powdercoat. The acid dip was done by Kwik Strip in Allentown, PA and the powdercoat by Model Finishing in Philadelphia. The product that I used inside the frame rails was Eastwood's "Black Heavy-Duty Anti Rust" #16032ZP. I used their application wand as well. Transporting the frame was more than half the fun! Below is a shot the day I retrieved it from Metal Finishing (safety flags removed). Oh, I also had them mask off the serial numbers so that they wouldn't get obliterated. I then dusted them with semi-flat.
          Good luck!
          Jeff

            David -

Two photos below of a galvanized midyear frame, from a post a couple of months ago over on CF; there was much discussion at the time about what could be done to ensure paint adhesion, but I don't recall any resolution. If you do a search over there on "galvanized frame" in the C1/C2 General forum, the thread will probably show up.

My guess would be zinc chromate, followed by paint of your choice.

sand with red scotchbright and prime with acid etch primer & paint with your choice of paint . I like Imron. Im not a fan of powder coat . I have seen to much of it peel after a while. could have been bad prep.? ps I think galvanizing is way overkill ....Bill

Way overkill! It lasted 40 years with little to no protection. Cleaning and painting should hold it for the next generation.

Dip your frame. Paint it with a good paint and reassemble. Unless you store the finished product out in the weather and drive it in the salt etc., it'll last long after you are gone. Galvanizing is way overkill!!!!

Check out www.aaagalvanizing.com for some interesting information. It appears that any secondary coating applied over the galvanizing, except possibly powder coating will only leave the end product open to chipping peeling , etc.
                          Looks like overkill to me.

Thanks to everyone for the responses, I agree that the galvanizing is overkill. Also it adds additional expense of @ 450 dollars due to the fact that the frame will have to be blasted to get the paint / powder coat to stick. I am going to have it dipped and then us rust bullet then paint.
