C3 Shock Sticker...What should it be?

For 1976 the juding guide shows one code, and I have seen other codes on actual shocks. Can a judge please clarify what is the "correct" code on these shocks for a 1976 built in October 1975.

    Thanks!

Re: C3 Shock Sticker...What should it be?

Chris, I was just getting ready to type the same question, but for a 1972 with standard suspension. The product catalogs list a EK and EM as stickers for a 63 to 79 but the JMG list the broadcast code for 1972 standard as a PE and PY. What is right and where to get?
    Thanks
    Jeff

Re: C3 Shock Sticker...What should it be?

I can tell you the shock codes in the 1968-69 and 1970-72 TIM&JG came from Delco documents. As I remember it, they were handwritten sheets that listed all the PRODUCTION shock codes, Corvette and other Chevrolet model lines. I can't tell you how far back or how new it went, because I had no dog in that race.

Have you asked the vendor where they got their codes? Maybe Joe can tell us if the PRODUCTION base shocks were the same part number from 1963 to 1979. That information might shed some more light on the issue.

There was a vendor who sold the shock stickers listed in the early C3 manuals, but I think he is no longer in business. While you are talking to the vendors, ask them what size the labels are. I believe there is a difference between the available stickers and the ones Delco specified. At least that was the case back when I was 1970-72 team leader. Since the marketplace is so fluid those details may no longer apply, and I am no longer in a position to keep up with them.

Re: C3 Shock Sticker...What should it be?

There was a discussion about Shock Broadcast Codes on this Board back around May 10th. I remembered, and found it by searching 'Broadcast Code'. I can't tell if the question was actually resolved.
        Regards,

Alan, I know this is a lot to ask someone, but can you pull a measurement off of that? I know, I know, but if you never ask you will never know!!
            Thanks

                Chris

It sounds like your questioning the "correctedness" of the judging guide which isn't a bad thing. I've found conflicts between what's published and what I see on manifests (build sheets), especially for 1975 and 1977. Your curiosity should equally question the correctness of codes seen on "actual shocks." They may have been installed from another year with a set of codes that differ from 1976.

After some thirty-plus years, what's correct are the codes that are printed on the manifest (build sheet). In 1977 we see codes CH (front) and CJ (rear) used and same used in 1978. FE7 called out CK (front) and CE (rear). Build sheets called out the codes workers pulled from bins for installation. Find a readable 1976 build sheet and you'll verify actual codes for a base suspension.

PS...I don't have a 1976 build sheet so unable to verify shock broadcast codes.

Another thought...for the purpose of judging (if that's your objective) stick with what is published in the guide until its changed tho shock codes aren't judged unless its Bowtie in which case it shouldn't be a question.

                    Hi Jeff,
You must be having lots of fun because you've asking about VERY interesting parts and method questions.
I have the remains of the sticker... it's 1 inch long and 5/8 th inch high. The repros I've seen are about 1/8 too high. Enough to be easily noticed. Of course my observation is based on 1 car. So it's worth........

                        Chris:

Here's image from a 1976 L48 M38 that shows the shock codes (CH, CJ). Note it conflicts with the 75-77 manual. The same build sheet also shows that M38s were being installed when L48 was ordered in contrast to what's listed in the Black Book.

Would anyone know which numbered boxes those shock codes are in? I can't quite see them.
