C2 Drive Shafts

I have just pulled the P/G trans from my '64 convertible and have a couple of questions about the drive shaft:

1) The Judging Guide indicates that there was a part number on original drive shafts. What was the number and/or where can this number be found? Was it stenciled on the unit or hand written w/ a grease pencil, marking pen, etc.?

2) Should an original drive shaft be "balanced" before it is re-installed with new U-joints to the trans yoke?

3) Any suggestions on ways to maintain the "natural" finish of the drive shaft after it is re-installed?

I don't know the answer to questions 1 and 3... My drives hafts were painted black and it is my understanding (perhaps incorrect) that they were black from the factory....

Regarding question #2... Get it balanced; shaft, new universals and transmission yoke... You might be surprised what you find. I just did the shaft from my 1963 which was significantly out of balance.
