    C1 Generator

My 1960 came with a 1102115 generator which was used on a 57 Chevy, not the correct 1102043 generator. I called Grossmueller's and they thought the 2 generators were identical and only the tags and possibly the pulley were different. Before I send it to them to check it out and determine if it should be rebuilt or is OK as is, I thought I would check with this forum to see if they could validate that info. Anyone know if they are identical units ? Also, does anyone have any experience with those 11 pc generator rebuild kits on Corvette Central. Thinking of just doing that myself if the generator tests out OK.

    Re: C1 Generator

I had been looking at my generators today and found one was rebuilt with no part number on a new tag except for a date and a 'rebuilt' stamp. The other that came on my 61 had a chevy passenger car number on the tag. In the 63 chiltons, specs were given for the different generators and there were some differences re amps but most were 30 or 35. The other specs listed were the same. A couple of different numbers were given for cars with AC.

I noticed the end plates were different from car to car but the stepped body of the generator would seem to be the same.

I would guess that if a shop rebuilt a genny way back when they were obliged to put a rebuilt tag on it. No other id was present. Perhaps the part numbers in an autoparts store book only distinguished the mounting ends that were affixed to the bodies. With the right end plates and correct tag you generator could be whatever you wanted it to be....would be my guess.

One difference I have a question about is the stepped case. One has a two piece case and the other is one piece.....when and why did 2 styles of cases occur?

      Re: C1 Generator

The fundamental test is the distance from the center line of the armature to the centerline of a mounting eye. Generators used on Corvettes measured approx 3-1/4" whereas all other Chevy applications (for power steering) measured 3-1/2". A quick test is if you can or can't slip your finger between the generator and the mounting "U" but there is also a visual in that the Corvette version has a much shorter cast in figure 8 vs. the more common version has a pronounced neck between the lobes of the 8. Check the archives, I believe that John Hinkley included an excellent photo comparison of the two.

And shame on Grossmuellers. They have been in business long enough to know the difference. Just ask them to provide the critical dimensions listed above. If it is the magic 3-1/4" then to hell with the tag - you won the lottery and you can re-tag it to whatever you like for about $25.

As a post script, the other, more common version will work with a tach drive but the belt length may have to be slightly longer.

      Best of luck,
      Mike

I've used the kits from Corvette Central. The last time I ordered them though they did not include the oil caps. Good kits, just need to find new caps, unless yours are good. Old caps had small logo on cap. Rebuild shop will charge you $45 to install and rebuild.

I appreciate the responses from everyone. My end plates are definately incorrect and the front plate should be aluminum, not cast iron like on the 1102043. Mike's comment about the distance between the armature centure line and the mounting eye was consistent with what I just heard from a rebuilder in Georgia (John Pirkle) who was referred to me. He was very helpful and knowledgeable. He said the case is the same. I'm going to get the correct generator from John.
