Removing paint from spare tire carrier

Does anyone have any expereince with a product that works well removing paint without damaging the natural fiberglass finish on the spare tire carrier?

I am also interested in any system developed for the products use in removing the paint. I know someone out there can save me some time! Thanks.

If the paint is just acrylic lacquer overspray from a repaint, it can be wiped off with lacquer thinner. Lacquer thinner won't hurt the fiberglass if used in moderation.

If the spare tub has been painted with black enamel for appearance, you'll probably have to use paint stripper. Any liquid gel paint stripper from a home store will work. Paint stripper is also not harmful to the fiberglass if you don't leave it on any longer than necessary to remove the paint. Rinse the stripper off the tub thoroughly with water.

If the support frame was also painted, you'll have to decide if you are going also strip the support or mask it off. If you're restoring for judging, you'll probably want to remove the frame, paint it to the correct gloss separately, and then re-rivet the frame to the stripped tub.

I had this same task this winter. I had to remove rust proofing ( bubba striles again) from a original bucket I purchased. I used hardware store stripper with a putty knife until I got most of it off. I then used the stripper with course rags as to not scratch the fiberglass. It worked great. It's now on my car, and you can't tell it was painted.
