    62 Fuel Filter

The fuel filter on my 62 340 SHP received a deduct in judging. The comment was it should not have an "O". I understood this to be the "O" on the center of the top. My filter has a sunken "O" on the top. New replacement filter tops have a raised "O". Pictures in Noland Adams book appear to have an "O" on the top of the filter. Does anyone have a picture of a "correct" filter top? See the attached pictures.

Thanks for the picture. As you state the picture is a C1 era filter and while it has a flat top it would not be correct for a 62 as the AC is in the wrong place and the part number is different. I was hoping to see a correct 62 filter top.

        Re: 62 Fuel Filter

I didn't state the picture was from a C1. I said it was from the 'era'. The flat top GF-49 fuel filter cover was introduced in the 1958 model year with early Corvettes known to have used the earlier big dome/large AC emboss cover.

Yes, there were some running changes and I'm sure I can't say whether there was only ONE mold/source for these covers. But, the picture I showed you has "Cover No 854392" embossed in it. Why do you say it has the wrong part number and the AC emboss is in the wrong place???

OK, I'll sift my parts stache further as you're not happy with what I posted...

OK, here are two originals side by side. The RH cover has the cover # emboss on the RH side of center while the LH cover has the same emboss on the LH side of center. Both read "Cover No 854392". Both bear an AC emboss on the outlet passage.

The RH cover has its AC emboss less crisply defined and the thickness and width of the bail insets differs from the LH cover. So does the exact width of the center circle, especially at its junction with the outlet passage. Neither have circlular depressions or raises in the center of the inlet/outlet passage center circle.

Now, we flip the sucka's over and look at the bottom (don't expect too much given the DB limits on resolution of posted pictures). The RH unit has a casting date that consists of the numbers 57 enclosed in a circle with seven tick marks around the circle. I'd read that as July of 1957.

The LH unit has a casting date that consists of eleven discrete dots in a whip-like outline with the alphameric code '2E' embossed below. I'd read this one as having been cast in 1962???
