    Munci Grinding

Just got back from Corvette Day and Larz Anderson in Brookline Mass. over 110 cars in the baking heat... great show BUT... the Munci I have in the 61 suddenly started to make grinding noise trying to get it into 4th gear. I only put it into 4th about 6 times, all with a grind, the rest was in 3rd gear (back roads). The car does grind about once every 50 times into 2nd gear, but I had chaulked that up to my skill at speed shifting (with the clutch). So... is the 2nd and 4th thing related? does this sound like a big deal? is it an in-the-car-fix? syncros???
    Thanks!!!

Assuming your clutch is properly adjusted, sounds like synchros - the 2nd and 4th issues aren't directly related (separate synchros). The transmission has to come out.

        Jim,
I'm sorry to hear about this problem. I was at Larz Anderson yesterday too and it was hot!!! Perhaps some of your trans oil leaked out over time, before you pull the transmission you could make sure the oil level is right. It's easy to see the level when you pull the plug on the side of the case. Sometimes those oil plugs are tough to take out, you need to have a good grip on the plug.

          Hi Jeff:
I looked at your profile to see what car was yours but you list many! I was helping park cars and got way too much sun... I was smelling gear oil which just adds to the problem... do you think low oil would cause syncro noise??? I have my 70 on the lift doing some frame repair right now, but I could use the old standby floor jack and stands... if I have to

            Jim.
I think you need to have the car fairly level to check trans oil. You also may find that the square plug is difficult to get lose without a good grip and some leverage. I'd prefer the lift, but good jack stands that are well placed under the frame might be enough. If you don't have enough trans oil your syncros might make noise, indeed. I'm not a transmission expert, but like anything, better to check the easy stuff first rather then jump into an expensive repair.
It sure was a bewlidering collection of Vettes there Sunday, really great to see so many. I took my silver 66', I was parked almost across from the 66' they were judging.

I agree witht the simple stuff. Was your's the car that came to the entrance then we sent you back out and inbetween the tents???
I'll do the jack stands thing I have a disabled car on the lift. Thanks for the help and we'll see you around!!!
