I've been out of auto verification etc. for sometime. I used to be able to go to DMV and ask for a copy of an old title. I'm finding this is not as easy as it used to be. I am looking for title history in IL and NY. Any one have any ideas?

Re: Title History
William,
with all the identity theft, etc. in today's litigious world - doubt if we will ever be able to get copies of titles, etc. EVER AGAIN!
bottom line - all one can do is post for information in the Driveline, on websites such as ours, etc. - GOOD LUCK IN YOUR SEARCH!Rick Aleshire

Re: Title History
I've used PublicData.com to obtain information on cars and people. As a matter of fact, I have a '70 350/350 block and found the owner of the car in Florida in 2002. Also try http://gov-reports.net/vin.php?searc...e=VIN%20Number for reverse VIN search.- Top

Re: Title History
A few months ago I sent a $5 check and a title search request to the DMV in Texas. Within three weeks they sent me copies of the last five titles back to 1983 for my 66 roadster. So it can be done depending on the state. I sent a copy of my current title proving I was the current owner.- Top

Re: Title History
New York State did not issue titles until the mid 70's. Earlier cars had and still do have transferable registrations. Due to privacy police I don't think that information is available.- Top

Re: Title History
At one time Illinois (under Secretary of State?) had a listing that kinda went beyond tracing "previous documents" relating to your car's title. A long time ago I had some success with license plate #s issued by Il be cause 2 times a year (?) they would call their computer to print out the list IN ORDER BY LICENSE #; at that time it got you the owner's name and address, the VIN and (maybe) when it was first registered in IL.
Federal and state laws reflecting refusals to provide info, even to folks who now own the car and can prove it, are prime examples of a legislator "playing for re-election in the even #d year,
Arizona's law was as the result of a stalking mental patient who got the ladies address from MVD; this bill ran through the legislature like a Malibu fire; except for the secretary typing it, it would probably easy to say that NO ONE ever read it.
During the trial, it came out that idiot had called her at home numerous times; he ALREADY KNEW where she lived, but......it played in Peoria during an even-numbered year and it was law.- Top

Re: Title History
Thank former President Clinton for your difficulties in title seaches. He was instrumental in the passage of the "Privacy Act" through Congress which he signed that makes this information much more difficult to obtain.
The passage of this act has also made it much easier for individual states to purge much of this information that was previously retained since they are now not required by legistlation to keep the information. Most states now only keep 10 years worth of records.- Top
