Production date

I have block with the casting 3970010. The date code is D10 8.
Is Aril 1968 too early for this casting?. I have heard that these 3970010 blocks didn't start production until early 1969. Is this correct?.

The 3970010 casting number was used for a LONG time. Maybe it is a 1978, Can you measure the size of the stamp pad? Is it closer to square than rectangular?

D 10 8 for an 010 block would be April, 1978; the first 010 castings were made in mid-1969.

Can you explain to me why you want to know if the stamp pad is square or rectangular.
Is it due to the different way it was casted?
