64 Prior Owner Search in MD

I recently purchased a 64 327/365 triple tan convertible in Maryland. The seller provided me with the prior owner's information who also lived in Maryland. I contacted him and he stated the original owner had come from Maryland but he did not have his contact information. By the way, it appears the car has 64,000 original miles. Thinking I had a chance to get somewhere with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration, I sent in the request for information form and the check for the search (as directed). When it came back it was marked "Your request for vin number 40864S****42 cannot be processed because of the privacy act". Do I have any other avenue to approach this or am I out of luck? Thanks to all...

USED to be able to do it here in Maryland, but now you can't.

The privacy laws enacted 10 or so years ago now prevent this.

Maryland has the records. That, I know for certain. They're at the main MVA in Glen Burnie, MD.

Curt, I had a similar result in NE on my car. I am pretty sure it had prior history there.

I sent in the forms (which I believe are pretty similar state to state) - I checked option 5 - "research", and received a form letter back stating I needed notarized authorization from the record holder (well if I knew that!).

I called to see if I could get anywhere - if they would verify mileage and city/year registered but they said no. Now just whose privacy would be violated by that???

If anyone has had success in using a different exemption/approach - would appreciate some advice.
