    Welding Cast Iron

What would be the best electrode, or method, to use when welding cast iron. I would like the weld to rust if possible.

    Thanks for any information!

i had a cracked cast iron block welded in the water jacket and the welder used a nickle rod.

the cast iron part ought to be heated up in a furnace prior to welding with the nickle rod. if the part is valuable, i'd have an experienced welding shop with furnace capabilites do the welding..mike

Cast iron is very tricky to weld without creating another crack. If you do not have expertise in cast welding, as Doc McQuack stated, take it to a welder that has an oven to heat (and cool properly) the item to be repaired.

Also one trick welders use to keep the crack from running is to drill a small hole at each end of the crack. That way the crack will not run when you weld it. Best left to a good weld shop that welds C.I.

Nickle rod and lots of heat.

We used to heat the cast until it was a dull red.
            Then perform the weld.
Then keep the torch on the weld area slowly backing off on the heat to allow the metal to shrink gradually.

It will stop that crack, but will not stop the crack right beside the weld if pre-heating and cooling are not done properly.
