    Speedometer/Odometer

The speedo cable in my 66 SB Roadster broke on our recent Route 66 trip. Up until that point the speedo and odometer had been working fine. I have replaced the speedo cable and the speedometer is back to working just fine. However the odometer is not moving - neither the trip odometer or the main odometer. Did I miss something while replacing the speedo cable or has the odometer just decided to go kaput? I'd appreciate some ideas on this.

    Thanks,

    Mike,
I have had to replace the odometer gearing in the speedometer. Not a real bad job but you should pull the cluster. Don H.

Almost guaranteed to be the gear drive system for the odometer as Donald described.

I agree Mike. It's your speedo gear in the cluster. I replaced mine many years ago and am to this day afraid to reset the trip odometer for fear it may happen again.

The tripometer reset cable is spring loaded to return to its 'engaged' position, but it's not uncommon on older original cars for the reset cable to NOT have been exercised and be dirty/sticky inside.

If the cable doesn't re-position itself to the fully out/engaged position upon manual tripometer reset, you risk the mating gears being left in an 'in-between' position and either clashing (destructive) or failing to engage the odometer/tripometer function of the speedo head....

Savvy speedo/tach rebuilders generally request the cluster to be provided WITH the existing tripometer reset cable so they can clean and re-lubricate it when the speedo assy is overhauled....

Looks like I have something to add to the winter project list. I may just decide to refurbish the whole cluster since it sounds like I need to remove the unit to make this repair. Thanks to all for the recommendations, including the service.

              Cheers
