    '67 L-79 fan belt question

    Hello All,

    Ref. '67 L-79 w/o ps

The AIM doesn't show the configuration for the alternator and fan belts, so which belt is in what track? Currently my alternator is in the 1st track (closest to the engine) and the fan belt is in track 2.

    Is this correct?

    Thank you in advance.

Re: '67 L-79 fan belt question

Kurt: Depending on the equipment you have (a/c, p/s, etc), the fan belt configuration is shown on the following pages of the AIM:
    with a/c, sheet C2 of UPC C60
with air injection, sheet A5.5 of UPC K19
with power steering, sheet A6 of UPC N40
    Good luck, Howard

Thanks Howard, it's a plain L-79 - no PS, no A/C and no smog, so those pages don't help me.

        Hi Kurt:

I don't have the same configuration as you do, but I believe I have seen extensive discussions on this board about the proper configuration for an L79 with no PS, no AC, and no A.I.R. I have read those postings with interest, since a have a general interest in small block pulley configurations.

There are four configurations for your car that each have various supporters:

        1) Only one belt, in the first groove (the groove closest to the engine)
        2) Only one belt, in the second groove
        3) Alternator belt in the first groove, captive belt in the second groove
        4) Alternator belt in the second groove, captive belt in the first groove

Based mostly on what I have read on this discussion board, my vote would be for configuration #4. However, there are quite a few conflicting opinions.

I suggest that you relax with a cup of coffee and search the archives with some key words that are likely to pull up previous posts on this subject. It makes for interesting reading.

          Kurt:
Two pictures of a 67 L-79 with U69 only (AM/FM radio) in Noland Adams Vol 2
page 421 clearly shows the Alternator belt in groove #1 (closest to the engine)
and the fan belt in groove #2.

Thanks Howard, that's one place I forgot to reference.
