    59 Starter Solenoid

Needs some help identifying the correct solenoid for my 59! I have two that have been rebuilt but the numbers are not aligned on the solenoid the same way! Does anyone know which of these are correct. I have included pictures of both and do realize that one has a brown end and the other is black. Correct color for 59 in the judging manual is black. Just wondering about the identification stamp on how it should be positioned.

    Regards,
    Jack

It's hard to comment properly as the pix are blurry... Most of today's digital cameras have a 'Macro' setting that needs to be invoked when doing closeup work to prevent the auto focus system from 'thrashing' and giving you blurry pictures...

The proper PN is 1119919 and the 'typical' orientation I'm used to seeing with the emboss on the solenoid housing is the RH picture of your side by side (aligned on the horizontal axis of the cylinder vs. vertical).

On the covers, it's not just a matter of black vs. brown bakelite; there should also be a script Delco Remy logo in the center of the main relief separating the two primary power terminals. Plus, in your side by side comparison, the LH unit uses two hex-head bolts to fasten the cover to the solenoid body while the RH unit uses slot-head screws. The slot-head screws are what I'm used to seeing on the older starter solenoids...

Thanks Jack! Sorry about the pictures! I'll try your suggestion in the future. The black ended part has the correct markings, as you suggest but the brown does not. It looks like I need to switch the two end caps and secure it with proper screws. I wonder if someone just re-stamped the one on the left since the orientation doesn't seem correct?

      OK, just another mystery part!

        (1) If there's no script Delco Remy logo on the solenoid's Bakelite cap, then it's an aftermarket unit... YES, you can substitute!

        (2) I didn't say ALL Delco solenoids were embossed in one direction vs. the other...simply that I was more familiar seeing the emboss running in a radial vs. axial orientation. It'd be easier to stamp the cylinder in the axial direction (no need for a 'rolling stamp' jig). But, with the millions of solenoids Delco produced each year, I'd be hard pressed to conclude there was only ONE assy line and/or set of assy tooling!!!

This is a 55 only solenoid but the delco logo is the same and uses only one bolt stud for starter wire and covers are not totally black original design.

            Hi all,

Just curious. When did the brown bakelite covers show up and/or what was their application?

Finish looks typical of aged/worn Bakelite to me...

If memory serves, we begin to see a mixture of brown and black Bakelite covers on Delco starter solenoids in the Shark era...
