    1963 Master Cylinder part numbers...

Would someone be able to list the part numbers for each available master cylinder for 1963 for me if they have a second? I can't find the information online, and I am at the office, and my books are at home.

    Thanks in advance.

I assume you're talking about CASTING number and not master cylinder PART number. The master cylinder PART number appears only on the bin that PRODUCTION master cylinders are supplied in or the box that SERVICE master cylinders are supplied in.

The 1963 master cylinder casting number for both standard and J-50 power brakes was GM #5462389.

I read your answer regarding the correct part # for 1963 master cylinder , however how does the casting date work ?

letters such as K232 means what date of production ?

Max, on some of the parts the letter I is not used, usually electrical, for those parts K is October. Just an FYI............

The resotoration book said that " after a an early prodution run , the master cylinder on the J50 power brake cars was changed from a thumb screw to a flat hex head bolt

So if the master cylinder I saw was produced in Nov of 2002 , it does not make sense as they used the thumb screw master cyllinders for early production of 1963 cars.

Where am I going to find a date correct master cylinder then?

Harry said on this post the master cylinder I saw is for October..
I still do not understand how to read the codes on the m,aster cylinder.

I am also posting what I wrote to HARRY... REGARDING THE USE OF THE HEX HEAD BOLT ON LATER PRODUCTON CORVETTES FOR 1963...

Max, I was just adding to the post, as an FYI, that some electrical parts omit the letter I in the date code. The K for the master cylinder is November.

The thumb screw and the hex head screw are interchangeable. Many P/B car owners changed from thumb to hex head as there was the possibility of cracking the hood. Why... The Power Brake Booster raised the position the master cylinder, therefore the thumb screw was closer to or hitting the hood when closed.

The non-P/B master Cylinder and the P/B master cylinder have the same casting numbers. The only difference is the added bleeder on the engine side of the P/B master cylinder. A non-P/B can be drilled and the extra bleeder added.

Since 63 master cylinders are a very rare item it may take a long time to find what you need. Go to swap meets such as Carlisle. Keep checking Ebay.

                      Max,

Joe L could probably confirm this, but I'm betting that no 63 master cylinders have been cast since the end of the production run 63 in August of 1963. Not sure why you think the one you saw was cast in 2002.

The GM #5462385 master cylinder (which used the 5462389 casting) was discontinued from SERVICE in March, 1964. So, it's very likely that its production ended with the end of model year 1963. Certainly, it was not produced after March, 1964.

In SERVICE, only the PB master cylinder was available (i.e. with bleeder valve). It SERVICED both standard and power brake applications.
