    floorboard rust out

As I was cleaning the carpet, I discovered that the floorboard on my 78 pacecar was rusted out in several places. Any ideas how to repair this?

Late C-3's had a metal floor pan and many of them have holes in them from water under the carpet and road salt on the bottom side. For just a few holes to fix a driver I have made a patch out of galvinized light sheet metal then used sealer and pop riveted it in before puting in new carpet.

The floor pans are available for just a few bucks less that $300.00

I learned something today!!! Metal floor pans in a Corvette. Never would have dreamed that. Any specific reason to put metal floor pans in???

Stephen, the newer Corvette's have balsa wood, even the 100,000+ new 2009.

The advent of the catalytic converter brought about the metal floor in Corvette. The heat from the converter would have melted the fiberglass.

Yes, that's the reason that the floorboards were changed to metal. However, there was an exception. 1975 was the first year of the catalytic converter but 1976 was the first year for the steel floor. So, there was one year with a converter that didn't use the steel floor.

Hinckster, I don't do any work on the plastic cars anymore. I would guess that it would be at least $1k for labor. I am stictly working on IH's and Federals now. Got a BIG Dodge sitting outside. But then again I am not getting much of anything done to anything right now.

My 75 has fiberglass floors but it has a metal plate that would sit over the cat converter if it had one..

                        Ken-----

Yes, 1975 used a metal shield instead of the metal floorboards. There's no way the converter could have been mounted in direct proximity to bare fiberglass. However, later model Corvettes with the steel floorboards also used a converter shield, albeit a different piece than was used for 1975 (but very similar to the 75 shield).
