    63 Distributor finish

    I am just about ready to re-install my distributor for a test run and I have tried to do a little sprucing up in and around the rear of the engine. One thing I did is repaint my holddown (wire, square washer and bolt - black enamel baked @325* for 1/2 hour) after wire brushing it clean.

    I thought it might be nice to clean up my distributor as well, so I checked the JG and other sources to see what if any paint color is correct. I don't recall seeing anything but orange overspray. Does any one have any suggestions, I'm taliking about just the housing below the cap down to the manifold.

    Perhaps 63 is different--but on every original 62 I ever saw the hold down wire and metal "bridge" and bolt were a natural finish rather than black.

      Mike;

      I have always heard that this or that part is of "Natural Finish". So far, no one has been able to explain what that is - perhaps you can help me here. Also, I have read that a good substitute for Natural or Black Phosfate (sp) was to spray flat black enamel, then bake. I'm doing that because mine had become rather corroded and shabby looking, to the point where I was using a solid orange hold down for a while.

      Thanks for your response. I appreciate your comments.

        Stuart,

        The distributors I have seen and done are painted black down to the engine. I also have seen orange overspray because I think they were in place when the engine is painted, krylon semi-flat is what I have used.

          Tim;

          Thanks. I got it all masked off and I believe I have the correct paint. Of course I took the I.D. band off first. I tought about cleaning it up too, but it has some orange overspray still on it.

          Thanks for your timely input. Now I can "get er done" and get back on the road tomorrow. I'd hate to miss my Sunday morning ride.
