    Master Cylinder Source Recondition

    I need to replace the master cylinder in my 1982. Any recommendations for a source?

    It needs to be date coded. To answer the obvious question: the old one is beyond reasonable repair and as a safety item it is not worth chancing.

    Yes, there are now available on the market reproductions of the 67-82 master cylinders. I consider them to be excellent. These can be dated for an extra charge. I think that most of the vendors have these by now, but the only one that I know of that does the date coding is Corvette Stainless Steel Brakes (www.cssbinc.com). About 200 bucks for the master cylinder, date coding, and shipping.

      Joe;

      You mean they actually cast in the date code on the housings, or are they marked in another manner. Reason I ask, it took me about two years of intense searching to find a used/rebuilt one for my 63 that fell within the date range. It was cast into the housing, as I recall (my original was stolen by a Corvette service shop in Downers Grove, IL. - had to get that in).

        Stewart,

        I've purchased a date coded master cylinder for my '74. I was very satisfied with both their product and my judging results. Ask questions...they're very helpful and easy to work with.

          The 67+ master cylinders didn't have a CAST date coding or, at least, one that anyone's been able to interpret. Many 68+ did have a stamped-in date code on the front brake line fitting machined surface or, in some cases, other locations. This is the type of date coding that's offered by CSSB.
