    Steering column escutcheon

Reinstalling my steering column after removing to replace a broken clutch pedal connecting pin to push rod. Oh yeah, I know all about that lovely chore if anyone needs advice. Anyway, everything is back in but I can't figure out to slide the column escutcheon back down the shaft to connect to the instrument panel. I can see that it has some sort of internal ring inside but can't figure out how to compress it enough. I slid it all the way rearward to remove the column and it is now at the end of the wiring protector. Aside from tearing up the internal retaining spring, anyone been down this road?
