Dyeing my rugs

My 63 roadster's rugs are in very good shape but have faded. I've seen rug dye's being advertised. I'm keeping them the same color (dark blue). Has anyone done this suceesfully before? It would make sense to take the rugs out of the car, etc.

Just need some advice.

I'll be watching this with special interest. I too have a 63 w/dark blue carpets. I have a couple cans of dye spray, but never got the nerve to try it on some areas of fade. It's a shame too because all areas of the carpet are great except the driver's side. It's starting to fray as well. I'm afraid if I get a new set and just want to use certain sections, it won't match the old - to say nothing about my perfect door panels.

Jerry,

Would remove the rugs first an check on a hidden area first, I know others have done it with Rit clothing dye before, might want to do a small area first to check with the color match.

Yes, check a sample piece to see how it comes out! I had an old carpet years ago that I dyed with a spray can and it looked great, until it got wet and the dye came off on anything that touched it. After your sample dries get it wet and test to see if the dye comes off. If you are doing an older car just drive it in the rain or wash it to ge tthe interior wet!

Back in the late 80's I had a 77 coupe that had dark brown rugs that were quite faded in the front. I ordered ( I think from Corvette Central ) spray cans - masked real well and did them in the car and let them dry for a day. They came out great, kept the car for 2 years and never had a problem.

My local Delco dealer mixes up an interior dye brew for me (PPG-53308, oxblood) for my 1974. It works well.

I used the black carpet dye from http://www.topoftheline.com/carpet-dye.html it worked out great and left the original carpet soft to the touch.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to Carlisle and will stop by Corvette Central and talk to them. I just may take the rugs out as a winter project.

UPDATE: I'm looking to rekindle this discussion. I was curious if anyone used the dye kit from American Carpets & Dyes? The video makes it seems easy, but there's no mention of the durability of the dye color.

I used RIT fabric dye from your local arts and crafts store. its made for nylon and such. I used a sponge and blotched and rubbed it in. and let sit in the sun for a few hours when done. turned out great.
