I replaced the stereo radio in my 1971 and low and behold, the power windows no longer work along with the courtesy lights and dash lights, clock etc. To install the radio I had to remove the guage cluster and right side lower dash panel. The fuse blew for the lights and obviously I have a short, since replacement fuses contunue to blow after a short time. The windows from what I can tell do not have a fuse in the fuse box, so I am lost. I was wondering what I should check for an obvious solutions or just take it in to the dealer and pay "the piper", so to speak. I guess my question is there something stupid that I did, or is it way above a laymans ability to diagnose electrical problems. Not all is lost though, the way the radio works fine. Thanks! Jim

Re: 1971 Power Windows Problem
Jim,
That's a tight place to work, perhaps you pinched a wire on a sharp edge of sheet metal and caused the short (most likely ).
I have a 71 and the service manual I can take a look at the electrical schematic later this evening. If I find some clues I will respond.
1. If you change a fuse does something work, even for a second?
2. If you change a fuse does the fuse stay good until you use something?- Top

Re: 1971 Power Windows Problem
You could have lost your ground as the dash lights, courtesy lights and power windows are on the same power grid. Also as previously mentioned you may have a short. You may have to take your right dash out again and start running down all the wires. It's there somewhere in that area.- Top
