What are two / matching 1966 masachusetts license plates worth?

Found two four digit ,original 1966 Massachusetts license plates for sale in presenatable condition.......thinking of buying to use on my 66 seller wants $250

is this a fair price ?

I would say that is way too much. I purchased an original plate on ebay for around ten bucks. Granted Indiana only requires the rear plate, so it isn't a matching set. But still I can't imagine a set being worth that much more.

$250 may be a little high, but not by too much. Here's the factors.

1. They're 4 digit plates. You know the snob value of that - then and now.
2. They're a pair. You usually don't get a pair. There's lots of single plates for sale.
3. What's the condition? But they can be refurbished pretty cheap.
4. Make sure the number isn't used. Make sure the seller will refund your money if the Registry refuses to accept them.

$250 seems like way too much. I spent $60 + S&H for my pair of 1967 MN plates off of eBay.

I paid about $30 for my 1956 Missouri plate. The state of Missouri will not accept restored plates (repainted or repaired). Neither will they accept for registration on a vehicle any plate which uses a numbering scheme currently in use; (ie. letter digit digit dash digit letter letter) for any purpose. I bought one plate that I thought would be okay to use and they rejected it because it was a pattern currently being used for motorcycle plates. That limited my selection severely considering autos, trucks, trailers, motorcycles, etc. If you intend to register the plate to the car, I recommend you find out what rules exist in your state BEFORE you spend ANY money.

I bought a four number 1959 plate at the Topsfield car show a fews years back for $10.00. Single plate, but Mass. only requires one plate. You can get on RMV website and lookup YOM plates to confirm if that number is taken. $250.00 is way too much in my opinion.

If the number is available and the plates are in really good shape you should buy them. I agree the price is steep, but 4-digit Mass plate pairs are quite rare. If you want to shop, I suggest contcting an ALPCA member, go to http://www.alpca.org for more info.

In Delaware, single and double digit black/white tags sell for THOUSANDS of $$$$.

A regular old tag should cost you just about $10 to $20 bucks, maybe $30-$35. for a matched pair.

That's what we pay in Maryland for old tags. That being said, we have a different system than they have in Delaware, where old original tags can and are still used, and there is a "snob value" to very low digits.
