Way wrong, did plenty of business! The state of PA now claims that after being in their state 10 days or more during a calendar year you are now a PA "business entity" and must collect sales tax on any item shipped into the state the rest of the 355 days of the year, even if your business is headquartered in MI and you have gone home. Think about that for a while.

how does this make sense if you are doing big $$$$$$$$ business at carlisle why poke yourself in the eye over something that cost you no money, the customer pay the tax. they will not be at any price disadvantage over another company that shows up at carlisle. also carlisle is less than 10 days

Clem, go back and read my post. If you establish a business presence in PA, which CC could be considered that, you will have to collect PA sales tax on everything that you ship to PA including what comes from their MI store.

            Hey Phil

its Bill are you going to be at Carlisle this year? i went to GM and it was DEAD. I have bought a few things fom Central and come to think of it they were always shipped. i thought it was because i did not need the part right away and this way they would not run out of stock.

Clem, some chose to follow the tax code, and some vendors wing it hoping if they send PA a few dollars after Carlisle the state will forget them until next year. C Central is so large that I am sure that PA would not somehow overlook them throughout the year.

Re: Corvette Central at Carlisle Next Week

I just placed an order with CC for pick-up at Carlisle and was told the "good news". They are offering free shipping to compensate somewhat.

I fondly remember (much earlier) Corvettes at Carlisle where the major parts suppliers all showed up with trucks or trailers that were mini-stores and you could buy off the shelf. I don't mind at all paying PA sales tax (although our own Canadian Govt will also get their 6% at the border and will also collect 8% on behalf of Ontario--less any exemption I'm entitled to for staying 48 hours in the US--about $400 as I recall). The convenience of being able to see and examine the part you're buying is the real loss here. Shipping returns of items back is never convenient.

I think one aspect not mentioned as to reasons why CC (and perhaps others) wouldn't attend is that I believe PA requires all vendors to have a "PA Sales Tax License", which may be expensive. It all sounds a bit draconian to me, but I suppose as the swap meet "business" has grown into big dollars over the years, the states have decided not to ignore the potential revenue. Does Illinois impose the same at Bloomington? I haven't been there since the early 90's so I don't recall.

Here in Ontario I think it's really only the established businesses that seem to be collecting sales tax at swap meets/flea markets. Individuals from my experience don't bother and don't seem to be bothered (by the Govt) about it.

                Looking forward to Carlisle anyway,

Grant, IL started the sales tax collection in the late '80's or early '90's while the meet was still at the old McLean County Fairgrounds. Just send them a few dollars and they were happy until next year. I am sure that has changed by now as most governmental entities are looking at additional sources of revenue

Talk about Canada. 20 years ago i sold 2 hard tops to a fellow from canada. he came down to queens ny to pick them up. i had to write him out a reciept so he could get them across the border.

                      Bill,

It wasn't so much "so he could get them across the border" as it was a matter of how much customs duty and tax was going to be payable. A receipt generally helps set the value for duty, unless it's a ridiculously low amount for the item. I brought back the rear 1/2 of a Firebird convertible body from a wrecker in Ravenna, OH some years back. It was sitting in plain view in the back of the pick-up truck and when the customs agent asked if I was bringing back anything purchased in the US I pointed to the body. He asked how much I paid for it and when I told him $50.00 (the actual amount!) he said that you couldn't even get a Canadian wrecker to light the cutting torch (used to cut the rear section from the smashed front) for $50.00. Luckily, I had a receipt from the wrecker to prove my point...

One of the biggest problems I've faced with importing from the US is vendors who use UPS, which has extremely high "border borkerage" fees. On more than one occasion I've received an order of small parts the value of which was less than the "minimum" $40+ charged by UPS for brokerage. This is why I like to buy or pick-up orders in the US, including having goods shipped to my hotel--which I have done. Our personal exemptions for federal and provincial taxes (there really is no longer any "duty" payable on US-origin goods, and they're not too fastidious in determining "country of origin" unless it's a car or very large item) after a stay in the US also allow us to keep the costs down by picking-up in the US.

By the way, my experience with package mail by USPS to Canada has been excellent (I know, we all gripe about our postal services). I bought a neon beer sign at the winter meet in Old Town Orlando a couple of years ago, and since we had flown to FL, couldn't bring it back with us. USPS shipped it to Ottawa for about $20.00, it arrived in a little over 2 weeks and the carton was "pristine" on arrival, as if human hands had not touched it. Probably a rarity, but I can't complain about them...

I have an NJ insurance business & we did a trade show in NY. We do no sales at the show but had to get a tax ID or we couldn't participate.

I am licensed in NY and also file a NY tax return along with corporate franchise fees, etc., Not to mention all the license fees which are absurd relative to other states.

My only point is that all this tax crap is so counter productive to business. I hate hearing how some bureaucratic snafu prevents any business from doing business.

I guess on the other hand, they are concerned because a lot of cash trades hands at these things?

So, an individual taking a booth and selling items at a swap meet is generally viewed as he/she being a 'company' that just happens to be structured as a proprietorship vs. partnership or corporation....
Remember when going to Corvette meets & selling parts & cars was fun & no hassel in the 80'S. Now almost every state want's show venders to pay sales tax that's why I quit selling my extra parts.
