997 heads value?

What is the going price for a set of 997 heads in excellent, unrestored condition? One is Aug. 57 and the other is November 56. Thanks.

if they were both nov 56, i'd guess about 3K. but since they are obviously a date code mis-match, i'd try to sell them seperatly for 1K each. mike

Rare heads , dates so what! Are judges now requiring people to remove the valve covers

Those prices have nothing to do with judging. The marketplace gives greater value to a "matched set" than it does to dates that are uncommonly far apart. Yes, we all know that the casting marks on the front of the heads are the same--but reality is that the market differentiates dates. And no, we don't remove valve covers--we now simply use the portable x-ray unit so we can see the dates without removing the covers.

I recently sold a matched set that were completely reconditioned for $2200. The castings were magnafluxed and there was one rocker stud that had to be screwed in but they were otherwise real nice heads. A-28-7 and A-29-7.
