    Re: 82 crossfire injection

After a brief delay, I am back on the project. Will definitely have to drop the tank because rubber lines are rotten leading from fuel inlet back to metal lines. Here is my question, I am trying to separate the joints in the tail pipes in front of the mufflers without doing any damage. They are frozen solid. Anyone got a silver bullett to share?

Thanks Dave, I will take a look up front in the morning and see if they go through a cross member.

Carl, did you remove the gas door lid ? That assembly shoul be easy enough to get out without dropping the tank. Also, I think you can test a new pump with a bucket of fuel. As for the "chuging"' this may also be a sign of low fuel pressure at the injectors. I also had a stuck fuel guage. After a couple of tanks of Chevron and some driving, it is working.

Alton, thanks for the comeback. Tank definitely has to come down because the two rubber fuel lines that go to the two metal lines are rotten and you cannot access the far end of them with the tank in place.

Carl, On the high idle, check and make sure you have the correct GM thermostat, put a new GM thermostat 195 temp in anyway. The thermostat will cause an idle problem as you describe. Happened to me. Good luck with the tank sending unit. >George

I'm not sure if you found the location for the fuel pump fuse, if not, I heard it is located in the battery box.

                Carl:

When I purchased my 82 it had been sitting for some time and I had a similar problem with the fuel gauge, etc. After getting the unit out it turned out that the previous owners (aka Bubba) had tried to fix it with soldering iron so I replaced the entire thing rather than running the risk of the car catching on fire. In the long haul this has turned out to be the correct move. I still had some problems and discover that the fuel filter had been by passed and thus changing the pressure delivered to the injectors. A new fuel filter, properly installed, fixed the problem. The filter is worth checking, it may be full of who knows what.

By the way, I have had zero problems with the cross fire system, contrary to the bad press it gets from some folks.
