    Good Tutorial 67 Frame Stenciling?

Is there a good tutorial/link/website that goes over step by step how to stencil and mark the frame of a 327/300hp 1967 convertible?? If you haven't done a frame off and are just planning on properly marking the frame, how do you tell how many shims have been added at each body mount??? Also, someone please go over the numerical designation of each body mount on a convertible so that I can reference these to the places Quanta says to put the marks. I am mostly interested in the passenger side frame stencil and the shim markings. Thanks as usual.

Re: Good Tutorial 67 Frame Stenciling?

I was just at our Chapter Judging Meet and we judged a few 67s. There was a comment made that the stencil should have been "rolled on" and not "sprayed on". I'm not sure what the kit is when you get it.

Can anyone else confirm the paint application method from the factory?

Re: Good Tutorial 67 Frame Stenciling?

A.O. Smith - Granite City used rollers to paint the stencil, which sometimes was applied by the truck driver just before he left their shipping dock with the frames stacked upside-down.

You can count the shims at each mount - just get up close with a flashlight and count the turned-down corners.

The Corvette convention for body mount numbering was different than the one used on passenger cars. On Corvettes, the mount at the base of the firewall was #1, the one under the sill plate on a convertible was #2, the one forward of the rear wheel was #3, and the one aft of the rear wheel was #4. The radiator support mounts didn't have a number. On passenger cars, the radiator support mount was #1, the firewall torque box mount was #2, etc.

About 3 years ago, I did a body off restoration of an original '67 327/300 hp car. The best way to know how many shims to put back on your chassis after you begin the rebuild is to count the number of shims that you remove from the chassis and body (some stick to the bottom of the body) as soon as you remove the body. As you count the shims, record them for future use. You then know also how many shim counting marks to make on the frame.

As for the part number, my car was an A. O. Smith body and the original painted number was still on my chassis. The paint looked like it had been rolled on--not spray painted.

If you'd like photos of my '67 stencil, I'll be happy to share that with you.

I didn't do a body off, my body is still on so I need to count the shims I guess. I do have an AO Smith body, so I suppose I need to roll the stencil instead of spray it. Can you just use some white paint??

Still need a good set of pics or article telling me where to put all the marks. Anyone? Thanks.

                Kirk,
Check out the link below. There was a thread about frame stencilling about a month ago here on the board. Thanks to Stephen, David and Ian for the photos. I don't know how long they will stay up but I have them saved in my favorites.
                Good luck,
                Shooter

P.S. If this doesn't come through go back to July 14 and a post named "66/67 original frame Stencil Photos wanted".

Awesome! So, the date that is in front of the stencil, how does one determine what that should be? I noticed yours is one day after the stencil date, is that normal? Also, the shim marks at the very front (engine) of the rail mark which body mount?? I noticed shim marks in the middle, is that for the convertible body mount that is found there?? Sorry, for all the questions but this is what I really need to get straight before I start. Thanks again.

                    Kirk.

                    This is a coupe body.

The date written on the pass side frame rail is one day prior to the car's build date. That's easy enough to figure. If you don't know your car's build date, just plug in your VIN into the NCRS WI program and you'll get your car's likely build date. Then look at a perpetual calendar and pick the prior business day. That would be a reliable day to write on your frame rail. For instance, if you car is built on a Wednesday, then write the date for the day before. Be careful though because if your car was built on a Monday, you'll need to write the date for the previous Friday.

Each vertical shim mark is placed on the outboard side of the adjacent inboard mounting flange.

                    Hope this helps.
                    Best,
                    Tony

Tony, did you actually observe the hand written date on your frame in the photo? just wondering because a date is also included in the stencil that was applied by the manufacturer.

St. Louis vs. A.O. Smith (Ionia, Michigan) body source doesn't matter; all cars got frames from the A.O. Smith frame plant in Granite City, Illinois (two completely different divisions of the A.O. Smith corporation).

                            That's quite unique - I've never seen a '67 frame with a "pull date".

I have photos of the original frame stencil. I asked Quanta to duplicate mine for me, which they did. Quanta asked if they could put my frame stencil in their data base since they didn't have one like mine in their '67 frame stencil data base. As for the shim marks and pull date, I had to put water on them to draw them out. They didin't photograph well.
