    NOS Fuel Pump - Rebuild???

    Hi All;

    I picked up a NOS 4657 fuel pump for my 1963 at Carlisle this weekend. (Have a repro in there now). This unit is basically as it was produced including the striped diaphragm with the tab. I know these are rebuildable...but should I rebuild it before installing it???

    Thanks!!

    Joel;
    I just rebuilt mine and would suggest you rebuild; but the striped lower gasket may not be available. use caution and remove so it can be reused. change all internal parts but save the small screws because they have a tiny "s" on the head and are not available either. David

      Joel,

      If the pump is new and sounds good when pushing the diaphram in-out I would install as is. Other then the valves, two rubber diaphrams, and a oil seal there is not much to rebuild.

      I have heard stories about rubber diaphram and todays gas but I can't comment on that.

        Joel, I agree for sure with one of the posts. Try and use the stripped cover gasket over again. Much better than the repro. I haven't worked on my 63 for awhile but when I do I am going to put a stripped gasket on(from an NOS pump) to replace of the repro because of leaking problem. Although right now it is not leaking. Musta swelled up and quit. John D.
        They are not east to install. But if you have a lot of energy I would put it on as is and keep an eye on it.

          Guys;

          Thanks all... I think I will rebuild and use the striped gasket over again as you all suggest. I know what a PITA it is to replace these pumps... The original repro I had in there failed before it hit 2000 miles... believe it or not, the pivot shaft gave out... replacing it was not fun. If/when I'm go through all that aggravation again, I want to make sure the pump is as good as I can get it.

          Thanks again.

          Joel
