    Rear Yoke Clearance

What is the clearance tolerance between the end of the Yoke and the Pin in a 76 Differential. I remember seeing it once, but can't find it now. Memory says it is not supposed to be more than .030".

    Any help would be appreciated,

There is no GM spec on it. However, I usually only recommend about 1/16". 0.030" would be at the absolute limit of what I'd consider acceptable. From that point, wear will accelerate rapidly.

Thanks Joe, I am going to replace one that has about .055" clearance.

One correction to what I wrote previously. The maximum that I recommend is about 1/16" (or, 0.0625). So, 0.030" is obviously not the "absolute maximum" of what I'd recommend; it's about half that. I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that----I must have been sleepy.

Anyway, you're going to be very surprised when you see what the end of the axle with 0.055" clearance looks like when you remove it.

          Joe:

At first I thought I had a lot more than the .055", when I took it apart I found the snap ring for the side with all the movement stuck in one of the Posi springs . I had to 'help' the yoke out of the cage because the end was mushroomed. After cleaning off the mushroom and using a new snap ring, I checked clearance and got the .055". I was going to replace the yoke anyway but then couldn't find the max tolerance to check the other side. I know I have read it somewhere, but couldn't find it again.

Thanks for your input. You certainly are a great resource for everyone!

            Bob------

When you find a yoke axle "mushroomed", that automatically means excessive wear. When wear gets to manifesting itself in this way, the case hardening is worn through. Personally, I would NEVER re-use such an axle, even after removing the "mushrooming".
